Chirality (Greek handedness, derived from the word stem χειρ, ch[e]ir - hand) is an asymmetry property important in several branches of science. An object or a system is called chiral if it differs from its mirror image. Such objects then come in two forms, which are mirror images of each other, and these pairs of mirror image objects are called enantiomorphs (Greek opposite forms) or, when referring to molecules, enantiomers. A non-chiral object is called achiral (sometimes also amphichiral).

Ok, so here we go,

Spring model in-between info:

Sometime during last month, I typed my name in iASP and a blog of a friend came up; a picture of mine was linked to the Michel Serres text u gave us to read, the one which once I read I immediately posted on my blog blabla@Columbia. During the delay which occurred while downloading these links I found out about the wikimania’s 1^st world conference that was to take place in Frankfurt 3 days after Constant passed away. At a certain point, a pop-up asked me if I could give access to iASP of the relations produced from my navigation. Distraction is an unpredictable tool, so I found myself reading about the first constitution written inside wikis (and this was to be the Iranian Constitution; an idea produced originally in NYC!!!!). Once I hit yes to the previous pop-up question, several links were visible implying actual locations & movement to any displayed information as well as several ads provided by goggle.

Constant real-time defragment:

Several days later I was aiming to visit the location linked to the photo of mine mentioned above; the suggested space was inside Riverside Park at 116st. A smoking, bending tension structure was sited slightly off axis with people around and in it; 4 speakers at its edges sounded at first as drops of water, yet with big amount of noise. The smoke produced form this structure was being used in order to superimpose multiple projections in constant movement; the general picture created was some kind of static: I couldn’t be conscious of a meaningful image, yet I could see still parts of the individual starting media that produced this result. A difficult-to-distinguish looping image of a spiral was to get most of the people’s interest during the time; the conversation was about this image being static. The structure’s surrounding skin was using a CAIDA model to refer to a network of similar structures. (time/save+ look myself at the mirror) Some of the nodes inside this diagram where grey, as being offline (81^st and 5^th Ave, near the Central Park for example).

Responsive interface:

A group of Columbia students are now coming towards my position carrying construction materials: 2 electronically bending plastics about 3m long, with adjusted USB inputs on them as well as photovoltaic units; 3 pieces of wire in order to connect their edges; an LCD skin; 4 speakers ; a smoke machine and several small projectors. They have just bought this pod and are about to impose it next to the existing one. Helping them out in order to compose it, they revealed to me that the first iASP was to be sited at a small park next to the corner of State Hwy & Rector Str.

Our infrastructure is essentially developed. The easy problems have been solved. Designing systems today is difficult because there is no consensus on what the problems are, let alone how to resolve them.” The year is 1973 and the topic is public policy. In the landmark article ‘Dilemmas in a General Theory of Planning’[1], Horst Rittel and Melvin Webber observed that there are a set of problems that cannot be resolved with traditional analytical approaches. They labeled such problems ‘Wicked Problems’.

It seems that wicked problems are not unique to public policy. In a wonderful book published in 1990 called “Wicked Problems, Righteous Solutions,”[2] Peter DeGrace and Leslie Hulet Stahl pointed out that many of the systems problems facing software developers have all the characteristics of wicked problems. Judge for yourself.

Wicked problems, according to Horst and Webber, have ten characteristics:[1]

There is no definitive formulation of a wicked problem.
Formulating the problem and the solution are essentially the same thing. Each attempt at creating a solution changes the understanding of the problem.

Wicked problems have no stopping rule.
Since you cannot define the problem, it is difficult to tell when it is resolved. The problem solving process ends when resources are depleted, stakeholders loose interest or political realities change.

Solutions to wicked problems are not true-or-false but good-or-bad.
Since there are no unambiguous criteria for deciding if the problem is resolved, getting all stakeholders to agree that a resolution is ‘good enough’ can be a challenge.

There is no immediate and no ultimate test of a solution to a wicked problem.
Solutions to wicked problems generate waves of consequences, and it is impossible to know how all of the consequences will eventually play out.

Every implemented solution to a wicked problem has consequences.
Once the web site is published or the new customer service package goes live, you can’t take back what was on-line or revert to the former customer database.

Wicked problems do not have a well-described set of potential solutions.
Various stakeholders will have differing views of acceptable solutions. It is a matter of judgment as to when enough potential solutions have emerged and which should be pursued.

Every wicked problem is essentially unique.
There are no ‘classes’ of solutions that can be applied to a specific case. “Part of the art of dealing with wicked problems is the art of not knowing too early what type of solution to apply.”¹

Every wicked problem can be considered a symptom of another problem.
A wicked problem is a set of interlocking issues and constraints which change over time, embedded in a dynamic social context.

The causes of a wicked problem can be explained in numerous ways.
There are many stakeholders who will have various and changing ideas about what might be a problem, what might be causing it, and how to resolve it.

The planner (designer) has no right to be wrong.
A scientist is expected to formulate hypothesis, which may or may not be supportable by evidence. A designer doesn’t have such a luxury, they are expected to get things right

How might you identify a wicked problem? The thing to look for is divergence. If requirements are volatile, constraints keep changing, stakeholders can’t agree and the target is constantly moving, in all likelihood, you are dealing with a wicked problem. If considerable time and effort has been spent, but there isn’t much to show for it, there is probably a wicked problem lurking somewhere. If business process reengineering is involved, there is a good chance of encountering a wicked problem.

He is the co-founder with Carla Leitao of A.UM Studio, an architectural and digital design firm based in New York and Lisbon, and the founder and creative director of a.CHRONO, a design research and consulting practice in New York City. He is the author/editor of 'Chronomorphology', CBA 2003, a compilation survey of studios he taught at Columbia University between 1999 and 2003.
Projects include:
Recent work includes 'Ornament', an online game in development by a.CHRONO; the 'House for Andrei Tarkovsky' competition, first prize; and several residential projects in both Portugal and New York State.

Laura Kurgan, principal of Laura Kurgan Architecture in New York City, explores the interface between building, electronic media, and information technology in both her art and her architecture. She recently completed the new offices for WITNESS, a human rights organization that distributes video technology and training to local activists. Past projects include Around Ground Zero, a fold-out map of the area around the site of the World Trade Center, widely and freely distributed in the months after September 2001. Over the last decade she has worked with new spatial information and mapping technologies, especially declassified satellite imagery and GPS technology. This work, which has been exhibited internationally, is collected in You Are Here: Post-Military Technology and the New Landscape of Satellite Images. Kurgan is currently Director of Visual Studies and Director of the Spatial Information Design Lab at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation.
